André Rebouças
Black Brazilian military engineer who drafted the basis of Brazil's 1869 concessions law (Law No. 1746) and the statutes of Rio de Janeiro's Customs Dock Company and Dom Pedro II Dock Company, the first modern private port operators in imperial Brazil. The Dom Pedro II dock was built without enslaved labour; in the 1880s he co-founded the Sociedade Brasileira Contra a Escravidão.
